Chiropractic For Newborns, Infants and Children

It surprises many patients when they see youngsters in our practice. “Why would a child need chiropractic care?” they often ask.

Many imagine that newborns and infants are adjusted like they get adjusted. Of course that’s not true. Often it takes no more pressure than what you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. That’s because children rarely have the scar tissue from longstanding spinal issues that we see in adults.

My own children were adjusted within hours of their birth.

Here’s how our youngest patients benefit from chiropractic care:

Pre-birth – Many mothers receive drug-free chiropractic care during pregnancy. Many report faster, easier and more comfortable births.

Birth trauma – Pulling, forcing and twisting a baby from the birth canal are still too common. Cesarean section, forceps, suction extraction or eager hands can do unseen damage. Even “natural” birthing methods can cause subluxations.

ColicChiropractic care has been shown to be helpful for many infants suffering from colic. After all, if you have a raging headache, all you can do is cry.

Constipation – Chiropractic isn’t a treatment for constipation. But when normal nerve supply to the digestive track and bowels are restored, proper function often returns.

Torticollis – Newborns and infants often have a tendency to hold their head to one side. Others may prefer breast-feeding from only one side because spinal issues.

Poor sleep – When spinal misalignments are reduced, more normal sleep patterns often emerge.

Developmental milestones – As your child learns to support her head, crawl, sit up and walk they often take a tumble or two. A chiropractic check can be helpful.

Growing pains – While there is no such thing, these nonspecific aches and pains often result from overloaded or unbalanced backpacks. Or the forward head carriage produced by constant use of digital devices.

Sports injuries – As a child Dr. Garrett was thankful to get adjusted before and after each football game. Trauma from sports injuries is far more common than you think.

As you can see, there are many ways youngsters can benefit from chiropractic care. And children seem to innately enjoy their adjustments. They don’t associate our practice with visiting the pediatrician with the white coat and painful shots.

Discover the Chiropractic Difference

“Children love being in our practice,” smiles Dr. Garrett. “Not only do we have the toys, books and activities they look forward to, I’m mindful to squat down to their level and treat them with respect.”
